Christians in Media – Hong Kong

It’s so amazing to see how big Christianity in Hong Kong. Because of ministries like Media Evangelism Ltd 《影音使團》, there are lots of Christian movies with Christian and non-believing actors in them, and many personal interview/testimonies produced. They have the HK Artistes Christian Fellowship. The popular “Yeah Show” even comes to Australia’s major cities. Apparently in HK just over 20% of uni students are Protestant Christians…I can’t even imagine the impact it would have if 20% of uni students in Australia were followers of Jesus.

There are just SO many high profile Christians in the HK media across all the generations so again I’ve tried to stay with those who have are rather public and boldly about their faith. Admittedly, I’m pretty disconnected these days with HK culture + my Chinese reading is slow s0 for those who are way more connected to HK than me so please feel free to share your insights to encourage us as well.

What stands out for me in a lot of these guys/girls lives is their complete honesty about their struggles – becoming distant/walking away from God, chasing wealth/fame, sexual failures, eating disorders and depression;  yet they revel in God’s forgiveness and love and rely on His strength. Here are just 3 of them:

Sheren Tang (鄧萃雯)

I really loved her in the series, Rosy Business/No Regrets. She really is such a good actress – winning the coveted TVB Best Actress Award. I was able to hear her speak at the Yeah Show in Sydney several years back. What we may not know is that she’s the only child of divorced parents. In this video (in Cantonese), she speaks of her sad childhood, her desire for romantic love, wealth and return to Christ.

Sheren is also well-known as being single; her thoughts on this are also encouraging for those struggling with singleness. She talks about dying to herself and living a new life for God and her Jesus’s unconditional love filled the void in her life, giving her real security and joy.

Part 2 and Part 3 are here.

Zac Kao (高皓正)

I just know him as the guy who hosted that Entertainment News program 《東張西望》 back when I used to have Chinese TV at home. He’s also involved in singing, acting and DJ’ing.

Speaks honestly about his struggles with his search for love as well as the battle with lust and pornography. There are a number of articles (in English) here (and older, here). Below is his testimony from a few years back. If you’d like something a bit more recent (but WAY longer) you can check out this video (in Cantonese).

Jill Vidal (衛詩)

Her and her sister are singers based in HK. Broken family, heroin possession, depression – she speaks of her darkest time in this video when she got arrested and was in rehab. In her darkest hours, she cried out to God and found peace.

Unfortunately I missed out on seeing and hearing her in person when she was visiting Sydney and Brisbane. See her testimony below (in English).

Being famous often comes with massive cost. It’s encouraging to see how God worked in these people during their times of adversity and trials.
These are only 3 of the many testimonies that you can find online. YT has plenty if you’re interested in more 🙂

  1. It is wonderful to know that these actor and actresses are followers of Jesus Christ. They are influential on many people, and their testimony would be impactful. We should always pray for them.
